How to Conduct Business with Strangers

Knowing how to conduct business with strangers can be a daunting prospect if you the business owner are a shy or reticent type of character.  If it is any consolation for someone with this nature, everybody, in one degree or another, possesses a degree of shyness and reticence.  It is simply human nature.

Strangers are simply people we are not familiar with. They are someone we haven’t previously met and because we haven’t met them before, we tend to treat them with a degree of caution.

When initial contact by either party is first made, you meet them because one or other believes the other party has something they want. All business deals at one time or another, involves working with people you don’t know well; so knowing how to do business with strangers simply means finding some common ground in which a win-win deal can be negotiated.

This business deal is simplified if you are a retailer and you have a shop front in a mall or shopping centre, then this is simplified because you have goods for sale and they have money to purchase them. This business transaction is very simple and goes on many times a day.  The only important thing to remember here is to make sure that they leave your store with a feeling of having had a pleasant experience.

If you are in a service industry, especially if you run a plumbing business or some other trade business, it becomes a bit more complicated. Firstly, most emergency jobs such as a water break or power outage, need to have costs made clear up front on the phone call, before you even meet the stranger. By doing business this way gives a good impression of professionalism and the stranger knows before you arrive to do the job, how you want to be paid and what your call-out fee and potential charges are likely to be.

By conducting business with someone that you don’t know and who doesn’t know you in this way; they are still a stranger but the common meeting ground for a win-win transaction has been clearly established. Also, by doing business with strangers in this way means that you are more likely to be paid for your work.  As a trade business in the service industry, this can often be an overlooked factor during an emergency situation.

It is necessary to learn how to conduct business with strangers because unless you master this skill, your business will not succeed or profit.  Besides, a stranger is simply someone that you haven’t yet met. Do it right and they could become your most profitable customer.
